GROUND SCREW FOUNDATIONS VS CONCRETE FOUNDATIONS ON SLOPED SITES

So, you’ve got this great bit of land, with trees on a slope and you want to put a cabin, lodge, office or even bird hide there. You scour the web in search of prices for concrete foundations, only to find they’re eye wateringly expensive. It can be disheartening to find the cost of getting your project out of the ground can take up a big chunk of a project’s budget!

Concrete slab foundations can quickly add up one a sloped site, once you factor in machine rental and labour for excavations, the cost of moving excavations off of site and creation of form work concrete foundations can have a monster price tag. Not to mention the potential damage done to site by heavy machinery or access issues on off grid locations. But there is an alternative, one that can save you time and money on your sloped project: ground screw foundations.

Sloped sites are one of the best places to use ground screw foundations, not only for their ease of install but also their cost. We’ve put together this post to illustrate the advantages of using ground screws on sloped sites, over traditional concrete slab foundations.

SITE PREPERATION & PRE-INSTALLATION

Ground screws require a lot less ground preparation than a concrete slab, a pre-installation site visit will allow our team to notify you of any stumps, brush or other obstructions that needs to be removed, but these generally only pose an installation problem when they’re in the way of where a screw needs to be installed. If these obstructions can’t be removed, our team can reassess the ground screw layout and bridge the object using two or more screws. There’s no need to dig into your slope and build up formwork for ground screw foundations, ensuring the ground is free of obstacles that prevent access to the ground is all that is needed.

As there’s no need for excavations, that means there’s no worries about heavy plant access or removing excavations from site. This helps keep your site undamaged and can save a lot of time and effort in areas where access for machinery is a problem.

ON THE DAY OF INSTALLATION

On the day of installation there’s no need to orchestrate concrete lorries, barrow concrete to site or worry about the weather. Our team will arrive with the screws and machinery needed to complete the work, if your project is off grid and there’s no power supply, we can bring a small generator to power our equipment.

Unlike concrete, ground screws can be installed whatever the weather, a freezing morning or heavy rain won’t delay your install. Our teams will work through the weather to get your foundations installed, usually this takes a day or less, although larger projects, or projects on harder ground may take longer to install. However, ground screws are ready to build on from the moment they’re installed, no need to wait for materials to cure or harden, you can get your frame up on your screws the moment our team drive and level the last screw.

FINANCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL COST

For sloped sites, ground screws are usually the cheapest option compared to concrete, even on level ground a 6m x 3m 15cm deep concrete pad, including excavations can cost around £2,150, in comparison using ground screw foundations would cost around £1,875 (shorturl.at/ceyLQ). These savings only increase if more excavations and machinery are required, which is often the case on sloped sites, where there’s more excavations needed.

Ground screws are also a more sustainable building foundation solution compared to concrete, which allows you to create a building with a lower carbon footprint. Not only that, but because large scale excavations aren’t needed, and the ground is only disturbed at a few points, ground screw foundations help to keep good site drainage.

CHOOSE GROUND SCREWS FOR YOUR NEXT PROJECT

It’s clear that ground screws make the best foundations for off grid, forested and sloped projects when compared to a traditional concrete pad. They can also help to keep costs of these types of projects low and cause minimal disruption and destruction on site.
